The General Assembly will return to the Capitol next week for the legislative session beginning Monday, June 2. Budget negotiations are in the early stages. As legislators finalize their priorities, it is important to advocate for two important cultural priorities impacting organizations across the state and especially in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

By emailing your district legislators and legislative leadership, you can support PA Museum’s request to maintain funding to the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) Grants to Museums line item. These grants support museums, historic sites, and historical societies across the Philadelphia region. Last year, the General Assembly appropriated $4 million to this line item. A $2 million allocation is proposed this year. We need your help urging legislators to add $2 million to maintain stable funding for PHMC.

Subject: Request for Increase to the Cultural and Historical Support Grants program

Message:

I write today in strong support of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC)’s Cultural and Historical Support Grants, which provide critical operating support for museums and historical societies. I, along with the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, PA Museums and other cultural advocates across the state, request your support for increasing the Cultural and Historical Support grants program line item. Funding levels for this important grant program reached a historic high point in 2006, with over $6 million available for museums and historical societies across the state. After being eliminated in 2010, the program was re-established in 2014 as a vital means of support for local organizations. The Cultural and Historical Support Grants program was funded at $2 million from 2014 until last year, when $4 million was made available to support 173 grantees in 57 counties. We request that the Cultural and Historical Support Grants line item be restored to the FY25 level of $4 million. This amount will restore stable and predictable funding at last year’s level and adequately fund our Commonwealth’s rich cultural and historical sites network. Pennsylvania’s museum community includes museums of all kinds, large and small. Our rich heritage as one of the original thirteen colonies has provided a firm foundation for our museums, historic sites, history organizations, science museums, and children’s museums to engage millions of visitors annually with world-class collections and programs. Our community of museums and historical organizations is key to helping teach local and Pennsylvania history to school children and preserving the history and the architecture of communities. These institutions are the stewards of millions of dollars in artifacts and hallowed places that tell the story of our state and its people to over 7 million visitors annually. Our museum and history organizations are economic drivers for tourism dollars and support over 25,000 jobs in the Commonwealth. With the above in mind, we respectfully request that the Cultural and Historical Support grants line item be restored to $4 million. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical funding.
