City of Philadelphia:

We've Made Progress. Now Let's Build On It!

Dear Arts Advocate,

On Wednesday, May 27, arts advocates from across Philadelphia showed up at City Hall to support making Creative Philadelphia a permanent part of City government through a change to the City’s charter. Thank you to everyone who attended, submitted comments, and demonstrated the strength of Philadelphia’s creative community.

We’re pleased to share that the Committee on Law and Government approved both the resolution and accompanying bill to amend the Home Rule Charter and establish Creative Philadelphia as a permanent Cabinet-level office. The change will have a transformative impact on our sector and the city as a whole, providing the stable administrative infrastructure needed to fully leverage the power of Philadelphia’s creative economy.

We extend our gratitude to Councilmembers Rue Landau and Isaiah Thomas, as well as the Mayor’s Office for moving this vital legislation forward and for their steadfast support of the creative sector.

This is an important victory—but there is still work to do.

The legislation must now be approved by the full Philadelphia City Council before voters can consider the charter amendment on the November 2026 ballot. We need a strong showing from the arts and culture community once again.

We encourage you to arrive early, bring colleagues and community members, and consider providing public testimony in support of the legislation. Print out a sign to bring (we will have some to distribute!)

Every voice matters. Together, we can ensure arts and culture remain a permanent priority in Philadelphia's government and civic life. Let’s make sure Philadelphia’s City Council sees the strength and unity of our creative community.

Advocate for FY27 Arts & Culture Funding

As City Council enters the final stages of FY27 budget negotiations, now is the time to advocate for the investments our sector needs.

The Cultural Alliance is urging City leaders to:

  • Increase funding for the Philadelphia Cultural Fund to $6 million (Sign the Petition)
  • Increase support for Mural Arts Philadelphia to $5.6 million
  • Provide operating and capital funding for key cultural institutions, including Please Touch Museum, Philadelphia Zoo, Mann Center for the Performing Arts, Dell Music Center, African American Museum in Philadelphia, and Philadelphia Museum of Art
  • Fund Creative Philadelphia at $1.3 million
  • Support the implementation of Philadelphia’s Cultural Plan through a $2.5 million multi-year commitment ($500,000 annually for five years)

We encourage you to contact your City Council members and urge them to support these investments as budget negotiations continue. Use our Advocacy flyer to help guide your conversations.

Philadelphia’s creative sector contributes more than $3 billion annually to the local economy while supporting jobs, strengthening neighborhoods, attracting visitors, and creating opportunities for young people. At a time of uncertainty in state and federal arts funding, strong local investment is more important than ever.

Show up. Speak out. Advocate for the future of arts and culture in Philadelphia
